Alligators and Crocodiles The major difference between alligators and crocodiles is the snout. The crocodile has a long, tapered snout, which narrows sharply from the eyes to the end of the nose. The alligator's snout is rounded. It is almost as broad at the end of the nose as at the eyes. The fear of reptiles, i.e. alligators, crocodiles, lizards, snakes, etc. is called herpetophobia or bactrachophobia.
